What is the TSI PortaCount 8040 used for?
It's a quantitative respirator fit test system using CNC technology for OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134-compliant fit testing of all tight-fitting respirators, including series 99, 100, and FFP3 filtering facepieces. It includes a Microsoft Surface tablet and FitCheck real-time seal visualization.
What is FitCheck mode, and why is it useful?
FitCheck shows in real time how fit changes as the worker dons and adjusts the respirator. It lets technicians and workers immediately see whether strap adjustments or repositioning improve the seal — reducing re-tests and helping workers learn correct donning technique.
Does the 8040 support group fit testing?
Yes — up to four workers can be tested simultaneously using four PortaCount units, increasing throughput for large-scale fit testing events.
8040 vs. 8048 — which should I choose?
Choose the 8048 when N95 filtering facepiece testing is the primary focus — it emphasizes the N95-specific fit factor range (1–200) and OSHA fast protocol. Choose the 8040 when your program covers a broader range of tight-fitting respirators without a specific N95 emphasis.
What's the most common reason fit tests fail?
Poor donning — strap routing, facial hair interference, and rushing the initial adjustment. Many failures are procedural. Pre-brief workers on correct donning and use FitCheck mode to diagnose seal problems in real time.
