Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a colorless, pungent gas that occurs naturally and is widely used as a preservative, disinfectant, and chemical intermediate in the production of resins, adhesives, and building materials such as particleboard and plywood. It is a known human carcinogen (IARC Group 1) associated with nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia.
