Jerome J405 by Ametek Arizona Instrument - Portable Mercury Vapor Analyzer

The Jerome J405 by Ametek Arizona Instruments is a portable mercury vapor analyzer designed for spill response, hazardous waste site monitoring, mercury exclusion testing, disposal and recycling, and worker safety applications. Using gold film sensor technology, it detects mercury concentrations from 0.5–999 µg/m³ with a resolution of 0.01 µg/m³, with a 16-second sample mode and 2-second survey mode for fast field screening. A rechargeable battery provides up to 24 hours of continuous operation, and onboard datalogging stores up to 20,000 time/date-stamped samples across 80 labeled sites with USB data transfer and analog 4–20 mA output for continuous monitoring. Accepted by EPA and ATSDR for cleanup applications in low-level mercury situations.

What is the Jerome J405 used for?
It's a portable mercury vapor analyzer used for worker safety monitoring, spill response, and mercury exclusion testing. You can't rely on sight or smell for mercury vapor, so it provides measured confirmation to support cleanup and re-occupancy decisions.
What types of jobs is the J405 commonly used on?
Disposal and recycling, hazardous waste sites, mercury exclusion testing, spill response monitoring, and worker safety. These jobs typically need repeatable surveys, documentation, and the ability to map where vapor is elevated.
Is the Jerome J405 accepted for EPA and ATSDR cleanup uses?
Yes — it's accepted by EPA and ATSDR for cleanup uses in low-level mercury situations. Your project still needs clear pass/fail criteria and documentation, so confirm what your client or program requires for recordkeeping.
Why can't I use a VOC PID for mercury vapor?
A PID is for VOC screening. Mercury vapor monitoring requires a mercury-specific analyzer. Using the wrong instrument category can create false confidence and unusable data.
How should I run a mercury vapor survey so results are defensible?
Use a consistent pattern and document exact locations. Mercury vapor can pool or stratify with airflow and temperature. Survey near suspected sources and along airflow paths, then repeat the same points after cleanup — without a repeatable pattern, you can't credibly show improvement.
Does the Jerome J405 support datalogging?
Yes — datalogging is supported. If your deliverable requires proof of conditions over time, confirm your data export workflow before field work so you can attach logs to your report.
How much does it cost to rent the Jerome J405?
Listed rental rates are $315/day and $910/week. Pricing beyond two weeks is quoted — contact RAECO Rents.
