Pre-Setup Requirements
Before powering on the unit, ensure you have the necessary components ready:
-
The Instrument: Either the 8030 (standard) or 8038 (with N95 companion technology) [00:20].
-
Alcohol Supplies: Reagent-grade isopropyl alcohol and the alcohol wick/capsule [00:45].
-
Communication: A PC with FitPro software installed if you are running the test via computer.
Step 1: Preparing the Alcohol Cartridge
The PortaCount uses a condensation nucleus counter which requires alcohol to function:
-
Filling the Wick: Soak the alcohol wick in reagent-grade isopropyl alcohol until it is fully saturated [01:15].
-
Inserting the Cartridge: Insert the saturated wick into the alcohol cartridge. Gently shake off excess liquid before sliding the cartridge into the side of the PortaCount unit [01:45].
-
Sealing: Confirm the cartridge is locked into place to prevent leaks or the wick drying out.
Step 2: Physical Connections and Power
-
Inlet/Outlet Tubes: Connect the twin-tube assembly to the front of the unit. The clear tube typically connects to the ambient air port, and the blue tube (sample tube) connects to the respirator sampling port [02:30].
-
Power Supply: Connect the AC power adapter to the rear of the PortaCount and plug it into a standard outlet [03:15].
-
Startup: Press the power button. The unit will run a warm-up cycle to stabilize the internal laser and saturator [03:45].
Step 3: Initial Daily Checkouts
To ensure the unit is operating correctly, run the automated daily checkouts:
-
Zero Check: Attach a HEPA filter to the end of the sampling tube. The unit should show a particle count of zero [04:30].
-
Max Fit Factor Test: Confirm the unit can detect high levels of protection by sampling through the zero filter [04:50].
-
Ambient Concentration: Remove the zero filter and verify the room has enough particles to run a valid test [05:15].
