Which parameters do most water quality projects start with?
Dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity and temperature cover most baseline characterization work. Turbidity gets added for stormwater, dredging, and drinking water work. ORP is added when you are controlling disinfection or working on remediation.
Do I need a conductivity sensor even if I am not reporting conductivity?
In most cases yes. Temperature compensation is required for nearly every other parameter, and the salinity value the conductivity sensor produces is what the instrument uses to calculate dissolved oxygen in mg/L. Without it you have to enter a salinity correction manually and hope it matches the water.
How often do water quality sensors need calibrating?
Dissolved oxygen should be calibrated or verified daily before sampling starts. pH and ORP should be verified each day of use. Conductivity and turbidity are stable enough to hold calibration for weeks but should still be checked daily. The more the data matters — compliance work especially — the tighter the interval should be.
Should I use a handheld meter or a deployed logger?
Use a handheld for profiling, spot checks, and site surveys where an operator is present with the instrument. Use a deployed sonde or logger when you need unattended data over days or weeks. Handhelds also let you move quickly between stations, which deployed equipment cannot do.
What do I need to supply on a water quality rental?
Your sampling plan and the calibration standards or buffers matched to your parameters. Instruments ship with NIST-traceable calibration included, but a field calibration before sampling is still expected — particularly for dissolved oxygen.
