Sound Examiner SE-402-IS Type 2 by TSI Quest - Datalogging Integrating Sound Level Meter

The TSI Quest Sound Examiner SE-402-IS is an intrinsically safe handheld sound level meter rated for use in explosive and flammable atmospheres, Type 2 microphone (ANSI S1.4 / IEC 61672-1 Class 2) integrating datalogging with a 30–140 dB measurement range and a 10+ hour battery life, designed for accurate noise measurement in occupational and environmental settings. It calculates and datalogs average SPL (Leq), maximum, minimum, and peak values over the run period, making it a reliable tool for hearing conservation programs and OSHA compliance assessments.

What is the TSI Quest SE-402-IS used for?
The SE-402-IS is an intrinsically safe Type 2 (Class 2) integrating sound level meter for noise measurement in explosive or flammable atmospheres — refineries, chemical plants, oil and gas facilities, and other hazardous classified locations. It measures Leq, Lmax, Lpk, and datalogs for OSHA 1910.95 workplace noise compliance and hearing conservation programs.
What does "intrinsically safe" mean, and when do I actually need it?
Intrinsically safe means the instrument is designed and certified so it cannot generate enough electrical or thermal energy to ignite a surrounding explosive atmosphere. You need it specifically when testing in a classified hazardous location (e.g. ATEX/IECEx or Class I Division 1/2 areas) — standard industrial, commercial, or construction sites do not require it.
SE-402-IS vs. the standard SE-402 — which do I need?
Both are Type 2 (Class 2) integrating sound level meters with the same 30–140 dB range and measurement capability. The SE-402-IS adds intrinsically safe certification for hazardous classified locations. If your survey is in a standard (non-classified) environment, the regular SE-402 provides identical measurement accuracy at lower cost.
SE-402-IS (Type 2) vs. SE-401-IS (Type 1) — which accuracy class do I need?
Both are intrinsically safe, but the SE-401-IS is Type 1 (higher precision) while the SE-402-IS is Type 2. OSHA 1910.95 and 1926.52 explicitly accept Type 2 for occupational noise compliance. Type 1 is needed only when a community noise ordinance, legal submission, or precision engineering study specifically requires that higher accuracy class.
Does the SE-402-IS support octave band frequency analysis?
No — it's a standard integrating SLM without octave band capability. For frequency-resolved (1/1 or 1/3 octave) measurements in a hazardous location, contact RAECO Rents to discuss available intrinsically safe options.
How does the SE-402-IS transfer data for reporting?
It transfers logged data via USB to TSI Detection Management Software (DMS) for report generation and time-history graphing, the same workflow as the standard SE-402.
What's included in the SE-402-IS rental kit?
The SLM, calibrator with microphone adapter, windscreen, USB cable, spare 9V battery, calibration certificates (emailed), and a flash drive with software and manuals. Call 866-736-8347 for current daily and weekly rates.
