How to Set Up an Outdoor Sound Monitoring Kit

Learn how to assemble and deploy the RAECO Rents outdoor sound monitoring kit for the 3M/TSI SoundPro. This 4-minute guide walks you through cable routing, mast assembly, weatherproofing with bird-spike windscreens, and connecting external power for long-term environmental noise sampling.

Step 1: Inventory and Hardware Overview

The outdoor sound monitoring kit is designed to protect your instrumentation during long-term environmental studies. The kit includes:

  • Windscreen Assembly: Features integrated bird spikes and a mounting point [00:13].

  • Mast System: Three extendable mast poles for elevating the microphone [00:20].

  • Cabling: A specialized microphone extension cable [00:27].

  • Instrumentation & Power: A 3M/TSI SoundPro meter and a 12-volt lead-acid battery for external power [00:31].

Step 2: Assembling the Mast and Cable

To protect the connection, route the cable through the center of the mast poles:

  • Cable Routing: Feed the extension cable through the top of the case and then through the first threaded mast pole [00:42].

  • Securing the Base: Screw the first pole directly into the threaded bed of the case [01:26].

  • Extension: Thread the cable through the remaining two extensions, assembling the poles as you go to reach the desired height [01:35].

Step 3: Connecting the Meter and Power

  • Meter Connection: Key the microphone extension cable into the SoundPro meter. Rotate until it seats, then thread it to lock it in place [02:11].

  • External Power: Open the bottom of the SoundPro and connect the 12-volt external power supply so the meter runs for the full duration of the outdoor study [02:25].

Step 4: Final Microphone Assembly

  • Preamp Attachment: Feed the cable through the black chrome mounting piece at the top of the mast [02:41]. Attach the SoundPro microphone to the preamp at the end of the cable [02:55].

  • Weather Protection: Slide the windscreen assembly (with bird spikes) over the microphone and secure it to the top of the mast [03:12].

Step 5: Alternative Tripod Mounting

If you are not mounting the mast directly to the case, you can secure the system to a tripod:

  • Mounting Plate: Place the tripod mounting plate on top of the tripod [03:37].

  • Securing: Align the screw with the threaded hole in the bottom of the case and tighten it for a stable, elevated setup [03:45].
