Hydrogen fluoride (HF) is one of the most hazardous gases in industrial use: it penetrates tissue deeply and can cause life-threatening systemic toxicity even from exposures that first seem minor. Lithium-ion battery fires release it too, which makes HF a priority gas for battery fire response, battery storage and post-fire cleanup.

RAECO Rents offers the Honeywell SPM Flex with the Mineral Acids ChemCassette, a tape-based detector that reads HF from 0.02 to 20 ppm, below the ACGIH TLV. It is used at lithium battery sites, petroleum refining alkylation units, semiconductor fabs, metal etching operations and chemical processing facilities. Rentals of up to 14 days check out online, and longer standby rentals for emergency response are available by quote.

Why does HF matter at lithium-ion battery fires?
Burning lithium-ion batteries release hydrogen fluoride. Published fire testing measured 20 to 200 mg of HF for every watt-hour of battery capacity, along with other fluoride gases. That makes HF one of the main gases to watch during battery fire response, around battery storage, and during post-fire cleanup.
What instrument does RAECO Rents offer for HF?
The Honeywell SPM Flex with the Mineral Acids ChemCassette. It reads HF from 0.02 to 20 ppm, with a lowest alarm of 0.03 ppm, and logs data you can export to a USB drive.
Will the SPM Flex tell me whether the alarm was HF or HCl?
No. The Mineral Acids ChemCassette responds to several acid gases, including hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromide, and it reports them as one reading. It works best where HF is the acid gas you're concerned about, or where any acid gas needs a response.
Can it measure down to the ACGIH TLV, or only the ceiling limit?
Both. The ACGIH TLV for HF is 0.5 ppm (8-hour average) with a 2 ppm ceiling, and the OSHA PEL is 3 ppm. The SPM Flex reads from 0.02 ppm, below all of them. When you request a quote, tell us which limit you're measuring against so we can set the alarms to match.
Can I keep an HF monitor on standby for emergency response?
Yes. Online checkout covers rentals up to 14 days, and longer rentals, including multi-month standby for emergency response teams, are available by quote. Call us to set one up.
How long does a Mineral Acids ChemCassette last?
It comes in a 14-day format and a 90-day format. Once installed, a cassette can be used for up to 90 days, and the expiry date printed on the cassette still applies. Cassettes are ordered for your job, so contact us as early as you can.
Can I use the SPM Flex at high elevation?
The SPM Flex is rated for use from 1,000 ft below to 3,000 ft above sea level. For sites above 3,000 ft, call us before you book.
How far can the SPM Flex sample from?
With the Mineral Acids cassette, the sample line can be up to 5 m (about 16 ft), and a particulate filter is required. Place the detector close to where a release could happen.
What else should I monitor at a lithium battery fire?
HF is one part of the picture. Teams usually pair it with a multi-gas monitor for oxygen, combustible gas, carbon monoxide and VOCs, and a real-time aerosol monitor for smoke and particulate. We can put the set together for you.
