The Trolex AIR XS is a real-time area monitor for respirable crystalline silica (RCS) using Optical Refraction Technology (ORT) to continuously detect hazardous silica and total dust concentrations. It measures RCS particles from 1–10 µm across a range of 0–1,000 µg/m³ with resolution to 0.001 mg/m³. Sampling intervals are configurable from 1 to 60 seconds, with rolling averages from 15 minutes to 12 hours. Battery life is 8–10 hours with continuous AC power operation also available. Compliant with NIOSH 7500/7602 and OSHA silica standards. Suited for mining, construction, and industrial hygiene programs requiring continuous, real-time silica exposure data without laboratory turnaround delays.

What is the Trolex AIR XS used for?
It's a real-time area monitor for respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in construction, mining, and industrial environments. Unlike photometer-only dust monitors, it combines a photometer with an inline XRF module to report actual RCS concentration — not just total dust — without waiting on lab results.
How does the AIR XS detect respirable crystalline silica in real time?
It uses patented Optical Refraction Technology (ORT) combined with light-scatter photometry. A laser is shone through each particle and its refraction is captured on multiple sensors, classifying particles by size, symmetry, and optical markers unique to crystalline silica. This gives real-time RCS concentration data — distinguishing silica from other dust — rather than a total dust proxy.
AIR XS vs. a photometer-only dust monitor — why does ORT matter?
A photometer alone measures total or respirable dust mass but cannot distinguish silica from other particles. In mixed-dust environments, photometer-only results may significantly over- or under-estimate actual RCS exposure. The AIR XS adds Optical Refraction Technology (ORT) to identify the crystalline silica fraction directly, capturing all forms of RCS including quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite.
Is real-time silica monitoring compliant with OSHA's silica standard (29 CFR 1926.1153 / 1910.1053)?
OSHA's silica standard currently references gravimetric sampling as the compliance method for exposure determination. Use the AIR XS for real-time process control, early warning, and directing controls — use gravimetric sampling for formal compliance documentation.
What site conditions affect AIR XS accuracy?
Humidity extremes, very high dust loading that may saturate the sensor, and variable dust composition can affect readings. At very low dust concentrations there are fewer particles for the ORT sensor to classify, increasing uncertainty in the silica fraction estimate. Typical RCS accuracy is around ±25%.
