What is the Gilian GilAir Plus used for?
It's a personal air sampling pump for worker exposure sampling using OSHA and NIOSH methods. It supports constant-flow (20–5,000 cc/min) and constant-pressure (1–5,000 cc/min) modes without external adapters, covering most personal IH methods — filter cassettes, sorbent tubes, and impactors — in a single unit.
What's the difference between constant-flow and constant-pressure modes?
Constant-flow maintains a set flow rate as media resistance changes during sampling. Constant-pressure maintains a set pressure, which some sampling methods or tube types require. Your written method specifies which mode to use — when in doubt, check with your lab before sampling.
GilAir Plus vs. SKC AirChek Touch — which should I choose?
Both cover similar personal sampling applications. The GilAir Plus handles constant-flow and constant-pressure in one unit without adapters, making it versatile across method types. How do I set up for a standard filter cassette sample?
Connect your cassette and tubing to the pump inlet, set the method-required flow, and verify with a primary flow calibrator. Clip the pump on the worker, route tubing to the breathing zone without kinks, and document start time, flow set point, and cassette ID. Treat any mid-run change — tubing pinch, media swap — as a new sampling event and document it.
What causes a sample to be rejected, and how do I prevent it?
Incomplete documentation is the most common reason — if you can't tie the result to a known air volume and a specific worker/task, it's unusable for compliance. Record media ID, worker ID, location/task, start/stop times, and verified flow. Keep chain-of-custody clean from field to lab. A technically valid sample with missing paperwork still fails.
