What is the Radiation Alert Ranger EXP with Pancake Probe used for?
It's a portable Geiger-Müller survey meter for detecting alpha, beta, gamma, and X-ray radiation. Common uses include health physics surveys, surface contamination checks, radiation work area monitoring, and field verification of radiological boundaries.
What radiation types does the pancake probe detect?
The GM end-window pancake probe detects alpha particles (when held close to the surface), beta particles, gamma radiation, and X-rays. Alpha detection requires close proximity since alpha particles have limited range in air.
Ranger EXP vs. standard Ranger: what's the difference?
Both use the same meter, the same 2-inch pancake GM tube and the same ranges and accuracy. The EXP puts the tube in an external probe on a 3 ft cable, so you can reach into tight spaces or scan a surface without moving the meter. The standard Ranger has the tube built into the back. Rental rates are the same.
Pancake probe vs. NaI scintillation detector — when should I use each?
Use the pancake probe for surface contamination surveys and portable beta/gamma checks where detecting surface activity matters. Use a NaI scintillator when you need higher sensitivity to low-level gamma radiation at ambient dose rates or when energy discrimination is needed. The Ranger EXP ships with a GM pancake probe and is not available with a NaI scintillation detector.
What should I confirm before deploying for a radiation survey?
Confirm the radiation type and energy range expected at your site, whether surface contamination or area dose rate measurement is the objective, and that the instrument's measurement range is appropriate for expected activity levels.
What does it cost to rent the Ranger EXP with Pancake Probe?
$60 for 1 day, $120 for 2 days, $175 for 3–5 days. Rentals longer than 14 days are available by quote.
Can I rent it for a month or longer?
Yes. Rentals longer than 14 days are by quote and billed monthly. We send a unit whose calibration stays valid past your return date, and if a unit comes due mid-rental we swap it before you have to send it back.
Can you download the data for me?
Yes. The meter logs readings you can download with the Observer USB software on the flash drive we include. If your company doesn't allow flash drives or third-party software, add a data download to your rental and we'll pull the data and email it to you.
Is this a dosimeter?
No. It's a handheld survey meter that shows the radiation level where you hold it. It isn't worn and doesn't track a person's accumulated dose. For a person's dose over time, use a personal dosimeter.
