It's a handheld XRF analyzer for non-destructive elemental screening of painted surfaces. It identifies lead-based paint on-site in seconds — supporting pre-renovation assessments, clearance decisions, abatement planning, and compliance documentation under HUD, EPA RRP, and OSHA lead standards.

XRF is non-destructive and immediate — results in the field, no sampling or lab wait. Paint chip analysis is destructive and slower but may be required for dispute resolution or regulatory confirmation. Many programs use XRF for screening and lab analysis for confirmation where required.

Measure multiple representative points per component, document substrate, paint condition, and exact test location. One reading per component is not sufficient — lead content can vary by paint layer and location. Use a defined measurement plan with consistent dwell time.

Surface geometry, substrate type, multiple paint layers, and uneven film thickness. Use flat, stable contact where possible, repeat measurements near decision thresholds, and document conditions at each test point.

Re-test the same point, test adjacent points, and if the decision has regulatory or abatement consequences, confirm with your project's required method. Borderline readings require more data, not a snap decision.

This unit uses a rhodium (Rh) anode. Per its published HUD Performance Characteristic Sheet (PCS), at the 1.0 mg/cm² action level a rhodium anode uses a 0.9 mg/cm² threshold in either Timed or Quick mode, with no inconclusive range at that level. Always confirm the specific PCS document matches this unit's anode, action level, and mode before making a compliance determination — RAECO's other X-550 configurations may use a different anode.

Record instrument serial number and operator, calibration/verification checks, date/time, building component description, substrate, measurement results, and photo documentation. Consistent documentation is as important as the readings themselves.

$630/day and $2,390/week. Pricing beyond two weeks is by quote. For pre-renovation or abatement projects covering large buildings, the weekly rate represents significant savings over daily — most multi-unit or multi-floor lead surveys take several days to complete properly.
