How to set precision and non-detection results with the Sciaps X-550

The SciAps X-550 (Lead Paint, RCRA, & Alloys) is a handheld XRF analyzer covering lead-based paint compliance, RCRA metals screening, and alloy identification in a single instrument. It features a high-current Rh anode X-ray tube (50 kV, 500 µA, 5 W) with a 20 mm² silicon drift detector (SDD) at 140 eV resolution, delivering results in 1 second. Included apps cover Lead Paint (HUD-compliant), RCRA (8 RCRA metals + 12 EPA Priority Pollutant Metals), Alloy (500+ grade library, 30+ pre-calibrated elements), Sulfidic Corrosion, and Residuals. Includes an integrated micro and macro camera and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Suited for PMI/NDT, environmental screening, and lead paint compliance programs.

What is the SciAps X-550 XRF Analyzer used for on mixed-material jobs?
It's a handheld XRF analyzer for elemental screening of lead paint, soils/waste, and metal alloys in a single instrument. It enables rapid field triage across multiple material types — sorting painted components, characterizing soil hotspots, and identifying alloy composition — without waiting on lab turnaround.
When should I use XRF vs. send samples to a lab?
Use XRF when you need immediate field decisions for sorting, triage, or guiding where to sample. Use lab methods when your program requires confirmatory results, leachability data (for RCRA waste classification), legal defensibility under a specified method, or when matrix effects require laboratory QA/QC.
How is alloy identification done with XRF?
Measure on clean, flat metal surfaces with minimal coatings or corrosion. Surface contamination and oxide layers can skew results — clean a small spot and re-test if readings seem inconsistent with the expected alloy.
What's a common mistake across all three applications?
Taking one reading and treating it as representative. For lead paint, test multiple points per component. For soils, use a grid with multiple points per area. For alloys, re-test if surface prep is questionable. More data is always more defensible near decision thresholds.
This unit uses a gold anode instead of the rhodium anode on RAECO's other X-550 units — why, and does it change lead paint results?
This is RAECO's only gold (Au) anode X-550, chosen for its higher-current alloy identification performance. For lead paint testing, gold anode uses a 1.0 mg/cm² threshold in Quick mode and 0.9 mg/cm² in Timed mode at the standard action level, with no inconclusive range either way. Gold is also the only anode with a published HUD PCS at the lower 0.3 and 0.1 mg/cm² action levels, if a project ever requires them. Always confirm the specific PCS document matches this unit's anode, action level, and mode before making a compliance determination.
What should I do when a result is near a regulatory or disposal threshold?
Re-measure the point, test adjacent locations, and if the decision carries regulatory or financial consequences, confirm with the required lab method. XRF narrows the uncertainty; lab analysis resolves it.
What documentation is required for a defensible XRF survey?
Record instrument ID, operator, date/time, calibration verification checks per SOP, measurement locations with descriptions or photos, substrate/surface conditions, and how results connected to any sampling or disposal decisions made.
What does it cost to rent the SciAps X-550 XRF Analyzer (Lead Paint, RCRA, & Alloys)?
$760/day and $2,800/week. Pricing beyond two weeks is by quote. This configuration's breadth — covering painted surfaces, soils, and alloy identification in one instrument — makes it particularly economical for mixed-scope projects that would otherwise require multiple instruments.
