How to ensure the TSI DustTrak is recording data

An essential "Quick Tip" for environmental professionals using the TSI DustTrak. This 1-minute guide explains how to avoid the common mistake of failing to start a data log, highlighting the specific screen indicators and elapsed time checks that confirm your air quality data is being recorded correctly.

Pre-Setup Requirements

Before deploying your monitor, check the battery level and internal memory. A DustTrak that is full of old data files may not have space to record a new session [00:10].

Step 1: Start the Run

The most common error is assuming the device is recording just because the screen is on:

  • The Play Button: To begin a session, press the Run or Play icon on the touchscreen interface [00:15].

  • Warm-up: The unit may take a moment to stabilize the flow rate before it begins writing data to internal memory.

Step 2: Identifying the Recording Indicators

Verify the status of the device using these visual cues:

  • The Red Circle: Look for a red circle or "Recording" indicator in the top corner of the screen. This is the primary signal that data is being logged [00:25].

  • Elapsed Time: Check the Elapsed Time counter. If the numbers are increasing, the instrument is successfully capturing the duration of your sample [00:30].

Step 3: Stopping the Study Correctly

To ensure the data file is finalized and not corrupted:

  • Stop Action: Press the Stop icon. Wait for the "Saving File" message to disappear before powering off the unit [00:40].

  • Verification: Open the Data menu on the instrument to confirm the most recent file size looks correct before leaving the site.
