PortaCount Daily Check & Fit Testing Guide
Use this guide to prep your PortaCount kit, complete the daily check, troubleshoot common failures, and manage software/data.
Step 1: Hardware Setup & Essentials
Before starting, ensure all required accessories are ready for the daily check and fit test:
- Connections: Plug in the PortaCount (8030/38 models) or power on the 8040 unit and laptop. 01:02
- Kit Essentials: You will need the twin tubing, zero filter, USB drive (containing the database), and the alcohol cartridge/wick. 01:24
- Alcohol Cartridge: Fill the cartridge only 1/4 of the way to avoid flooding the unit. 03:05
Step 2: Performing the Daily Check
The daily check ensures the unit is functioning correctly before official testing begins:
- Database Selection: Ensure the “TSI PortaCount Database” is selected from the USB drive. Avoid “Demo/Training” mode, as data will not save. 02:14
- Connecting Tubing: Match the blue tube to the blue intake and the silver tube to the silver intake. 02:56
- N95 Check: If testing N95 masks, ensure the N95 checkbox is selected before starting. 03:21
Step 3: Troubleshooting Common Failures
If the daily check or fit test fails, try the following:
- Low Ambient Particles: If the first part of the check fails, turn on a particle generator to increase particle count in highly filtered areas. 04:25
- Wick Replacement: If issues persist, replace the alcohol wick with a fresh one and allow it time to soak properly. 04:48
- Zero Check Failure: If the unit detects particles during the zero check, replace the zero filter with the spare provided. 06:01
- Mask Issues: Confirm you’re using the correct mask adapter kit. Subjects should avoid smoking 30 minutes prior and be clean-shaven for best results. 08:28
Step 4: Software Management (FitPro Ultra & FitPro+)
Data management varies slightly depending on your PortaCount model:
